Isaac

I couldn’t believe that she had given me the slip. One moment, she was speaking with me through the bathroom door, asking me where I wanted to go for lunch after the initial presentations. The next moment, she was nowhere to be seen.

After dressing in a rush and running across the road to the conference, I scanned the large areas inside the convention center, but it was like finding a needle in a haystack. I didn’t even know what she was wearing, so I just kept my eyes open for a hot little blonde carrying my baby.

Luckily, it didn’t take me long, as I heard her familiar laugh and followed her voice. I found her talking to an older gentleman. As I got closer to them, I overheard him talking about his family to Greta. She was laughing along as he narrated stories about his kids. It was a relief seeing her in a happy mood.

As I walked closer, I heard him ask, “So, Greta, is your husband around? I’d love to meet him. Is he also involved in GrayBit?”

I saw Greta hesitate, so I thought that this would be the perfect moment to redeem myself for having been an asshole to her in the past.

“There you are,” I said cheerfully as I came up behind her and placed my arm around her shoulder.

She gazed at me with wide eyes. Then comprehension dawned on her, and she smiled with relief.

“I’ve been looking for you,” I said, lightly kissing her on the lips.

“You must be Greta’s husband,” the man said and held out his hand.

“That’s right,” I answered and shook his hand. “Isaac.”

“Frederick Wallace,” he introduced himself. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I was just asking Greta whether you are involved in the family business as well.”

“I try to be as involved as I can be,” I said and smiled proudly. “But this beautiful woman is the brains behind the coding and all the computer stuff. I am pretty useless when it comes to that. I’m lucky if I manage to send an email to the right person.”

Frederick and I laughed heartily, while Greta smiled modestly.

“I was beginning to think that you didn’t exist, as I don’t see a ring on her finger,” Frederick said, and glanced at Greta. “No offense, my dear.”

“None taken. It does bother Isaac a bit. But once I crossed the seventh week of my pregnancy, my fingers swelled up and now, my ring doesn’t fit.”

“We’ll definitely have to get it resized, honey,” I said to her with a wink.

She nodded with a bright smile. Turning back to Frederick, she said, “It’s been great chatting with you. But I think I need to go lay down for a while. This little one takes all my energy.”

“Of course,” Frederick said. “It was lovely meeting you both. I look forward to chatting again.”

“It was good to meet you, Frederick,” I said and shook his hand again.

“Same here, Isaac. You look after this wonderful woman.”

I nodded and Frederick wandered off to the other booths.
